The NRC battle for the newest SA Rally Champion is heating up. It goes without saying a brand new Champion will be declared in 2017 due to the dramatic restructure in SA Rallying.
The Title race is a two way fight between Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Guy Botterill (30) in his Toyota Etios and ATS’s Richard Leeke (21) in his Ford Fiesta.
Richard became the Youngest winner of a round in the National Rally Championship at the recent VW Rally held in Port Elizabeth and surrounds.
Guy Botterill who is usually ever consistent had two mechanical issues in a row now, where the first one wasn’t too expensive in terms of points, he could still nurse his car home in Secunda.
But in PE he had to retire due to a blown head gasket and cracked piston and that is all Richard Leeke needed to grab the overall standings lead in the Championship.
With 3 events remaining, the points difference is 4 points in Richard’s favour. The next rally will be held in Bronkhorstpruit on 18/19 August and will be sponsored by Electrothread.
To add to the mix and sustainable growth of the sport, an Ex Double SA Rally Champion will make a guest appearance in the Electrothread Toyota Etios to boost the R2 Class entries to 9.
Who knows, he might like it so much that it turns out to be more than just one event participation..
